One hour. Once a month. It changes what you see.
Most small business owners check their marketing the way most people check their bank balance: occasionally, in a rush, half expecting bad news. An hour before a holiday. A quiet Tuesday when the phone is not ringing. You look at the website, you feel vague, and you close the laptop without deciding anything.
A monthly review works better precisely because it is boring. Same time each month. Same four questions. Same twenty minutes of looking and forty minutes of deciding. You are not hunting for inspiration. You are watching instruments.
Here are the four we ask every client to keep, and what each one tells you.
One: what came in, and from where
Open your enquiry record. Not the website stats, the actual enquiries: calls, form fills, emails, footfall you only got because someone said where they came from. Count them. Then split them by source.
You want two numbers on a page. Total enquiries this month. Enquiries from each channel: Google organic, Google Ads, referrals, social, returning customers. Written down. The writing is the point.
A single month means little. A line of twelve months tells you everything. You will see the seasonal shape of your own business, the month the plumber referral source dried up, the campaign that quietly produced nothing for a quarter while it looked busy.
Two: what it cost
For the paid channels, divide spend by enquiries. That is your cost per enquiry, and it is the number to watch month to month. Not to panic at. To notice drift in.
A cost that was £35 and is now £55 is a conversation. A cost that was £35 and is now £140 is an alarm. The difference matters, and you cannot tell the two apart from memory.
For organic channels the maths is different. Your spend is what the agency costs, plus your own hours. Divide that by enquiries that clearly came from search. It will make your SEO budget feel either obvious or uncomfortable, both of which are useful outcomes.
Three: what the instruments say your website is doing
Three checks, five minutes.
Search Console, performance report, last 28 days versus the previous 28. Total clicks and total impressions. Are they holding, rising, slipping? Slipping clicks with steady impressions means your listings are still showing but less tempting. Slipping impressions means your positions are moving. Same symptom, different disease.
Then your enquiry form itself. Fill it in. Right now, this month, as if you were a customer. If it errors, emails into the void, or dumps you into a spam folder, you have just found the most expensive bug in your business.
Finally, mobile. Open your homepage on your phone. It is fine if you have done it this morning. Do it anyway.
Four: what you are deciding
This is the step everyone skips, and it is the only one that pays. Three columns: keep, change, stop. One action per row, named, with a date.
Keep is easy. Change is where the budget talks. Stop is the hardest and most valuable column in small business marketing. The campaign that has produced one enquiry in six months. The directory listing nobody has ever clicked. The social channel you maintain out of guilt. Stopping is free and it is usually where the money is.
Why boring wins
The instinct is to review marketing when something feels wrong, and to change something when you are in the room. That combination is how small budgets get spent moving things around. It feels like work and rarely produces enquiries.
The monthly habit inverts it. You look on schedule whether or not you feel like it. You note drift early, when it is cheap to correct. You decide from a line of numbers instead of a mood. And most months, honestly, nothing much happens. You write it down and you close the laptop.
Those quiet months are the system working. The month your main lead source goes flat, you will know inside thirty days, not the morning the phone stops ringing entirely. The whole value is in the noticing.
If you would rather someone else built the review and ran the first one with you, our team does this as part of every SEO and PPC retainer. Get in touch and we will show you last month’s line before you commit to anything.
