How Google Decides Which Websites Rank: A Plain English Guide for UK Small Businesses

The short version: how Google works

Before we get into the detail, here is the whole thing in a few sentences. Google sends automated programs called crawlers to visit websites and read their pages. The pages get stored in a giant index, which is essentially Google’s library of everything on the internet. When someone searches, Google looks through that index and ranks the pages it thinks are most useful. Three jobs decide whether your website gets found: being crawled, being indexed, and being ranked well. Most small business websites fall down on at least one of them.

Crawling: how Google finds your pages

Crawlers find new pages by following links. They start from pages they already know about and move through links from one page to the next. If nothing on the internet links to your website, Google may never discover it. That is why a brand new site with no backlinks can sit in search results for weeks without appearing anywhere.

There are also technical barriers that stop crawlers from reading your pages. A slow server, a page that never finishes loading, or a robots.txt file that blocks access can all prevent Google from seeing your content. The site does not need to be technically perfect, but it does need to be crawlable. If Google cannot read a page, it cannot rank it, no matter how good the writing is.

Indexing: getting into Google’s library

Once Google has read a page, it decides whether to store it in the index. This is not automatic. Google filters out pages it considers low quality, duplicate, or thin. That means pages with very little content, pages copied from elsewhere, and doorway pages built purely for search can be left out entirely.

For a small business, the practical lesson is simple. Every important page on your website needs enough original content to stand on its own. A page with one paragraph and a contact form can be indexed, but it will struggle. Pages with real information, written for humans, get indexed and stay indexed.

Ranking: the factors that matter most

Ranking is where Google decides the order of the results. It uses hundreds of signals, but they all feed into three broad questions. Is this page relevant to the search? Is this page high quality? Is this source trustworthy?

Relevance starts with matching the words someone typed. If a customer in Ascot searches for “roof repairs near me”, the pages that mention roof repairs, in Ascot, in a way that matches the searcher’s intent, will be considered. Quality is about whether the page genuinely answers the question. Trust comes from signals like links from other websites, positive reviews, and consistent business information across the web.

Here is the part that surprises most business owners. You do not need to be the best website on the internet. You need to be the best match for the searches your customers actually make. A well-written local page about a specific service will often outrank a giant national site, because it is more relevant to the person searching.

Why local businesses have an advantage

Google knows that a plumber in Wokingham cannot serve a customer in Glasgow. So for local searches, it leans heavily on location signals. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and mentions of your town or area on your website all feed into this.

This is genuinely good news for local businesses. You are not competing with the whole internet. You are competing with the handful of businesses near you that are doing their online basics properly. Most of them are not. A clean website, a maintained business profile, and a steady stream of honest reviews will put most Berkshire businesses ahead of the local average.

What this means for your marketing

None of this requires a degree in computer science, but it does require consistency. Make sure Google can crawl your site by keeping it fast and free of technical blockages. Publish real content that answers the questions your customers ask. Keep your business information identical across your website, your Google profile, and any directories. Earn reviews and, over time, links from other local businesses and organisations.

Search engines change their algorithms regularly, but these fundamentals have not changed for years. Crawl, index, rank. If your website is missing from search results, the problem is almost always one of those three.

Getting the basics right takes time, which is exactly why most small businesses never finish the job. If you would like a clear picture of where your website stands and what to fix first, we can help. Book a free discovery call and we will walk through your site together.

I'm so pleased with my new website, set up relatively recently by Sum Factors. It has attracted a number of new clients very quickly and my website looks very professional and attractive. Paul and Karen are so helpful, friendly and professional and I would highly recommend them

google

I would recommend SumFactors to anyone who is looking for more than just a website designer. Paul met with me and straight away understood my business and where I wanted to take it. His knowledge and experience has been invaluable, creating the website and digital strategy which has been part of RBHM's success. Paul is friendly and really easy to work with, always happy to help.

Sumfactor (aka wonderful Paul) always has my best interest at heart, it's so rare to come across an agency who not only knows what they're doing but you can 100% trust. Paul will openly Challenge on my decisions even if it means him making less money at times as long as it's in my best interest he'll say what he has to say and I'm so great full for that. Couldn't recommend them more

We were introduced to Sum Factors over a year ago when we opened our business and needed a website and they were - and still are fantastic! The website is very professional but - most importantly - the ongoing support is priceless! nothing is too much, things get done very quickly and Paul and Karen are the nicest team you can work with!

I am so impressed with the service I have received working with the Sumfactors team. Nothing is ever too much trouble, they are incredibly creative and knowledgeable. They are experts in their field but go out of their way to understand our business and our goals and work with us to achieve these. Their prices are extremely competitive. I would recommend Sumfactors to any company or sole trader any time. From the team at Inspire Me Travel

They are a blessing to our business - couldn't be in safer hands on all accounts!

I have recently started working with SumFactors on Fletcher Of London and they have been great. Really lovely people to work with, they are quick to respond, and always there to offer support and advice. They have shown me how to manage my own products and shop so now I feel confident to do more things for myself. I would highly recommend SumFactors.

It been great working with Sumfactors. I know very little about the tech side of things especially when it comes to Google ads and Website updates. But both Karen and Paul have been amazing. Taking me through everything step by step. The best thing about them is you feel they genuinely care about growing your business. It's as if it is their business too and that makes them an absolute pleasure to work with.
